Romanian Numbers, Phone Numbers, and More

Romanian Numbers“- There’s a numbers game going on out there. Whatever you say in Romanian, you’ll come across a few Romanian numbers sooner or later. Phone numbers, prices, and ages… What will your reaction be?

Are you going to freeze and say the number sheepishly in English with a Romanian accent? (I’ve witnessed it!)

Or are you going to rattle off a tongue twister like șapte sute douăzeci şi cinci (seven hundred and twenty-five) calmly and serenely?

It sounds lovely, and in this article, we’ll explain how these numbers are formed and how to use them correctly every time.

How Romanian Got its Numbers

image

Romanian is not the “purest” of the Romance languages, as linguists are aware. Many words that are used often have been influenced by Slavic or other nearby languages. However, numbers are wholly and completely Latin.

Even significant sound alterations like decem zece and quattuor patru fit well into the ideas of how language evolution works. Additionally, as all of these numbers ultimately originate from Proto-Indo-European, a language spoken more than 3,000 years ago, they are all connected to the English numerals as well.

When compared to other languages, Romanian noun gender is one of its most distinguishing characteristics. The three genders of Romanian nouns are masculine, feminine, and neuter. Neuter nouns are intriguing because they sound feminine in the plural yet masculine in the singular.

image 1

We’ll merely say that unu and doi are those numerals’ masculine equivalents for the purposes of this article. Una and două are the feminine equivalents. You don’t have to worry about that kind of declension above two, either!

Talking about zero operates just as it does in English. We say “one degree” and “zero degrees,” and the plural is also required in Romanian: un grad, or “zero grade.”

Moving on to numbers eleven through nineteen Prepare yourself for a small surprise if you’ve studied other European languages in the past.

EnglishFormal RomanianInformal Romanian

Fifteencincisprezececinșpe
Sixteenșaisprezeceșaișpe
Seventeenșaptesprezeceșapteșpe
Eighteenoptsprezeceoptișpe
Nineteennouăsprezecenouășpe

They are all normal! There is none of the eleven, twelve nonsense found in the other European languages. The base number is where the words spre, which means “toward,” and zece, which means “ten,” both originate. Spre originally meant “over,” which makes more sense.

What’s up with that third column, too? Sprezece is, as you may have already noted, a bit of a mouthful. As a result, that ending is frequently only heard as șpe in everyday speech. Everyone uses these short forms, thus you wouldn’t want to express it in a formal tone since you would offend stick-up grammarians.

Look at that word for “eighteen” again. Actually, the term ptspr has the most consonants in a row of any word in Romanian. Due to the inconvenience, the version optisprezece, which adds a vowel to make things simpler, is frequently used. Once more, something is not seen as accurate enough to record.

After 19, things continue to get simpler. The plural of zece, zeci, is added to the root number.

Thus, the word “twenty” is actually two plus two, or douăzeci. According to the same logic, “forty” is patru + zeci. The lone anomaly is “sixty,” which deviates somewhat from the pattern. There is no sign of the usual form șasezeci; instead, șaizeci appears.

The phrase is literally “twenty and five” for a construction like “twenty-five”: douăzeci și cinci. Nothin’ there!

These words can be be pronounced more simply: the entire zeci sound is reduced to ş or zeş, rendering the term “fifty-one” as cincizeci şi unu cinzeşunu.

Additionally, we add the term de, which means “of,” when we count items beyond twenty. Therefore, rather than having “twenty somethings,” we actually have “twenty of something.” Observe:

  • Ali Baba Şi Cei Patruzeci De Hoţi
Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves (Ali Baba and The Forty of Thieves)

The sky’s the limit after we pass ninety-nine. The number 365 is written as trei sute șaizeci și cinci, which translates to “three hundreds sixty and five,” much like in English.

image 2

I did say “hundreds,” after all. The word for “hundred” is sută, while the required plural is sute.

One more thing to be grateful for is this: For an English speaker who thinks “million,” the word for 1000 in other Romance languages is something akin to mil. 1000 in Romanian is written as mie, which is sufficiently far away to prevent confusion.

The Ordinal Romanian Numbers

We therefore understand how to count in Romanian and how to count things. How about making a list?

Ordinal numbers are a total breeze to use in the situation.

The sole atypical word in Romanian is for “first”; primul is used for masculine and prima is used for feminine. Since what you’re actually saying is “the first [anything],” ordinal numerals all have regular masculine and feminine variations.

So, you modify the base number word by adding -lea to create a male ordinal. Simply add -a to an ordinal to make it feminine.

Al treilea / a treia is the translation of “the third.” Really nice, no? Unfortunately, there are a few vowel deletions and additions, so it’s not quite as regular as that. Here is a chart to assist you:

EnglishRomanian (masculine / feminine)
The firstprimul / prima
The secondal doilea / a doua
The thirdal treilea / a treia
The fourthal patrulea / a patra
The fifthal cincilea / a cincea
The sixthal șaselea / a șasea
The seventhal șaptelea / a șaptea
The eighthal optulea / a opta
The ninthal nouălea / a noua
The tenthal zecelea / a zecea

Check out the final one. Everything with a suffix of -zece will have the same behavior as zece. As a result, the endings of all the numbers from 11 to 19 (as well as 111 to 119, 211 to 219, etc.) are the same.

  • al doisprezecelea / a douăsprezecea
    The twelfth (masculine / feminine)

When we reach twenty, a new pattern starts to show. Multiples of ten, as we are previously aware, finish in -zeci. This will frequently change to -zecea and -zecilea (masculine) (feminine).

As a result, we would finally reach al treizecilea and al cincizecilea, which both mean “the thirtieth” and “the fiftieth,” respectively.

Furthermore, we only alter the number’s very last digit when we’re not counting even multiples of ten. We don’t say “the forty-fifth” like we do in English. The phrase “the forty-fifth” is pronounced al patruzeci și cincilea/a patruzeci și cincicea in Romanian.

You should be able to count almost anything with this knowledge.

  • etajul al cincilea
the fifth floor (literally the floor the fifth)

Romanian Phone Numbers

Let’s spend a moment considering the telephone, one of the most prevalent applications of numbers in Romanian daily life. The country code for Romania is +40, or plus patru zero.

Romanian citizens could not make international calls for a very long period unless they were in the government. Things began to open up in the 1990s, but the phone numbering system remained convoluted, with some counties having numbers that were longer or shorter depending on their population.

But now, everyone has a nine-digit number with a required zero at the beginning. Don’t overlook it! To get someone’s phone number, just say:

  • Îmi puteți da numărul de telefon?
Can you give me your phone number?
